Summary:
Gathering Blue is a companion book to The Giver. It is not a continuation of the adventures of Jonas, however, does loosely refer to a boy with blue eyes who the reader might assume is him. The book follows the story of Kira, after her mother’s death from an illness. Kira is a disabled teenager with a twisted leg who has an unusual talent- or a magical power- in weaving. Her power enables her to see the future from what her hands weaver. After her mother’s death, the villagers want her to be left in the Field to die as she has no protectors and will not benefit the village with her disability. Kira and Vandara, the women who pushed for Kira’s death the most, go to the Council of Guardians, and Kira gets accepted in the Guardian’s building and granted her life.
Although initially, Kira trusts Jamison, her defender at the court, what she learns with time changes her perspective on Jamison and the system set by the guardians. Kira begins to understand that not everything was as it seemed to be. She realizes that the system set by the Guardians find the tykes with power, kills their families, and takes them into custody to benefit from their powers. , Skeptical about who to trust and who to fight, Kira tries to do her best to protect herself and those she loves.
