"He only wants a woman who is free because his dream is to put her in a cage"

I had a general idea of the apartheid, I knew where it happened, for how long it had lasted, and the main actors involved. But never had I listened to the experiences of a person living under such an atrocious regime. This book, by Trevor Noah, did just that for me: it showed me the nightmarish legal system of the South African government ruled by the Afrikaners firsthand. It illustrated the extent of police brutality and racial inequality that stretched till even after the release of Nelson Mandela and the formation of democracy.

From one engrossing story to the next, this book captures the youth of Trevor. His mom, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, is given a big portion of the book. The anticipation that Trevor and Patricia felt towards their future amid the domestic political disarray is truly inspiring. Them against the world, these two faced the exploitation and brutality of the regime fearlessly. Their will to live, not according to the coerced decisions of the ruling class but according to their disposition, left a peerless image of ambition in my head.

A feminist, a firm believer of God, an idealist, a woman with a strong sense of who she is and what she is capable of, Patricia drew me the model of a resolute individual. Being unapologetically herself, she stands as proof of the power of hope, of believing that every tomorrow will bring a new promise.
